Cymbeline: Act 1, Scene 1

Cymbeline: Act 1, Scene 1

The opening of the play offers us its bizarre plot details and then illustrates them vividly by beautifully portrayed characters, clad, in the BBC version, in elegant Elizabethan costume. The analogies to the opening of “King Lear” are obvious, but the confusions of the plot development finally reduce all the characters to stunned mercifulness to all their mutual mistreatments, while in a state of ignorance of the truth, so the play can end happily.
